Daventry District
The district extends from the Warwickshire boundary, neighbouring the town of Rugby in the west to the northern edge of Northampton and then northwards to the Leicestershire border near Market Harborough. The total population exceeds some 65,000 but that figure is rising. Daventry Town itself has a population of around 19,000 and the town is the main centre of administration and employment in the district. As well as the town of Daventry, there are 78 villages dotted about in the surrounding countryside. These vary in size from quaint hamlets to the five large communities of Brixworth, Long Buckby, Moulton, Weedon and Woodford Halse.
Daventry has excellent communication links to the rest of the country and its central location makes it an ideal place for businesses and private individuals alike. The M1 and M6 motorways are a short drive away and there is easy access to the rail networks, either by public transport or car. Rugby and Northampton both have major railway stations with regular bus services running from Daventry. There is also a smaller rural station at Long Buckby some four miles away. Daventry attempts to offer a balance between rural and urban lifestyles. The town offers all the facilities you would expect of a place growing in sympathy with environmental concerns. All this is set amongst the rolling hills of the Northamptonshire uplands, which are a natural extension of the Cotswolds. The highest point in Northamptonshire is not our own Borough Hill, but Arbury Hill near to the village of Badby. If you like rolling hills, and picture postcard villages, woods, reservoirs and elegant country houses, then you have come to the right area. As well as this, Daventry district is rich in history. There are major links with the gunpowder plot in 1605, and the English civil war (1642-49). Charles I stayed in the town before his defeat at the battle of Naseby. There are also ghosts galore and notable people such as the Elephant Man have paid the district more than one visit. We don't have an Alton Towers (not yet anyway!), but even that centre of fun and mayhem is easily reached! And, of course major cities such as Birmingham and London are just a hop away as well!
Daventry Town Centre
The town centre itself is contained within a conservation area and all the recent enhancements that have taken place have been done with the determination that all interesting historical qualities should remain intact. Before the new Tesco supermarket got the go-ahead, there were extensive archaeological investigations into the site to ensure that nothing of historical importance was lost. The new Tesco will improve the range of facilities already available to the residents of Daventry and the surrounding district, shoppers will have more choice and there will also be increased employment opportunities.
